FELL IN LOVE WITH FELT

Felt crafting, sewing is an easy and joyful process, working with felt could not disappoint any crafters, stitchers, sewists. It is straightforward and happy-go lucky style to execute your projects and gain some confidence very quickly. All in all it sounds good! But what is very appealing for my personal taste is that it comes in a wide range in colour variety, an it will be for you too if you are into colours!

Felt has been in my repertoire for some time, I only started to use it more frequently when I got some thicker ones. I learnt they were perfect to carry through all my quirky funky fun handbags and clutches without having any difficulties making them. Before that, I mainly seen felt in its highest quality being used as wall coverings, sculptural fabric manipulation and textured 3D art fittings by London based Anne Kyyrö Quinn contemporary artworks, her designs are appearing on the walls like living, breathing creations.

Being a versatile craft material it is normally within many households, especially kids loving it, but also can be utilised for eco furniture insulation so once it is in your household it can never leave or being thrown away. It can be reused, up-cycled, recycled and a bunch of countless fun and scenic items can come out of them and re-live in a form of fashion accessories or seek to your fashion pieces.

3 REASONS WHY I THINK YOU SHOULD STORE UP FELT IN YOUR SEWING CORNER

  1. It doesn’t fray or unravel, which makes it easier for us and also is works just amazingly for non-sew projects

  2. Versatile, can’t be used in countless ways, from insulation to decorations, from creating sturdy handbags to small embellishments and kids toy. My creations come out exactly how I plan them at the sketching phase, no unexpected turn arounds, no hidden detours they come out just like that :)

  3. You can be a completely thoughtful creator with sustainable eco - crafting. Of course, felt has more affordable options, like acrylic ones, but if you can choose wool felt, which has a very low impact on the environment as it is a degradable that makes it sustainable for the environment.

NEGATIVES BUT TURN THEM INTO POSITIVES

Although most of my felt crafts mainly evolve around making accessories, therefore most of the disadvantages won’t really make a difference to me, however the below points might not be as positive for some depending on the type of projects you might have in your crafty mind so by all means they are note worthy.

  1. Felt is not an elastic fabric

  2. Depending on what kind of felt you are working with, it can be a bit sturdy sometimes, and it doesn’t act like smooth fabrics as it has no shine or silkiness like a smooth satin, nor extremely soft and fluffy as a fleece, however it has a bit of fluff after some usage

  3. Careful washing. If it goes through an inappropriate washing process it can shrink. Safest way to go about is just to damp a sponge and clean its surface or use very gentle detergent.

ONE EXTRA TIP SEWING FELT

It is one of those things you need to see when you try and test and if you see your sewing machine skips stitches, then you might need to change the needle.

Start with a medium size needle 70/10 and as you go test, thicker felt might need 80/12 or 90/14.

To show you some inspirations for the upcoming week I have collected a few original one of a kind fashion accessories you can make from felt! Once you click on the pics it will direct you to the step by step instructions so you can create many many cool and innovative pieces!

I just loved making these funny and bright handbags, especially inventive handbags, clutches from felt, the ones don’t look like a bag, but they are! It sparks joy and are perfect to spice up any mundane moments or dull outfits. Some of them can even be done as a no sew felt crafting project if you don’t have a sewing machine at hand.
