How incredibly exciting it is that one of the most ancient form of textile art and creating with our own hands, hand-sewing, stitching has its new dawn. Sewing has been always around, however its development during the last few decades made crafter’s life more easier.
SEWING ON THE RISE AGAIN
Due to economical and environmental changes more and more people awakens to the fact that it is a great way to be a thoughtful maker, eco-friendly and sustainable, whilst our purse benefits from it, too.
Beyond all the hard facts, it is getting more popular and an appealing hobby to many because hand sewn, handcrafted items carry a completely different value in the eyes of the wearer. Sadly it seems fast fashion industry dictates other people’s trend and standards we should fit ourselves in, rather than creating our owns, wether that’s getting the right material, the perfect fit and tailoring or perhaps the colour we want to wear.
Whose eyes don’t get a tired seeing all the mass produced items, uniformity with a lack of personal touches? Learning sewing or stitching comes with an advantage as it allows us to customise our garments, which can be in many ways: it can be in a form of reconstructing, customising, updating old, refashion or recycling.
So overall, I think it is an
AMAZING WAY TO SPICE UP YOUR LIFE IN A CREATIVE WAY
Being eco friendly is incredibly thankful for the Planet, it slows down contributing to the waste by using already bought items or fabrics are already manufactured and in circulation. If buying second hand fabrics is not your thing, you can go to local fabric stores and buy “scrap” material. Most of the time this is what I do, you can be amazed how many times you will find gems, a left over fabric piece one deemed to be too small to create something out of it, can be totally enough for someone else for an entire project!
GREAT FOR OUR HEALTH
Being in the creative flow has an incremental benefit on our well-being and sense of self. It creates a feel good hormone when we are in the state of flow. Besides when we appoint ourselves being our own production line manager and we create what we want and how we want it, ultimately leads us to a richer satisfaction and a longer and better life cycle for our fashion staples.
Regardless of your advance level, there are just so many benefits of having a sewing machine. Whether you are planning to recycle your lifeless clothes, reuse your fabric scraps making scrunchies or adding fancy seam stitches to your kitchen towels, you will love it!
Although, there are other hobbies out there which could be equally beneficial to our health, today I would like to talk about sewing and share my view on the most essential sewing tools you need as a beginner to start off your journey.
9 USEFUL AND ESSENTIAL TOOLS FOR SEWING
A pair of good quality scissors. Save so much headache by getting the best straight from the get go. It is essential to invest into a pair of good quality scissors. You can even get a starter 3 piece dressmaker kit with rotary cutter, thread snips, fashion scissors included.
Needles and pin cushion
No dressmaker can have enough pins! Even though they seem like a lot whilst packed up in the box, you will see along the way sometimes you need all of them.
Needles are one of those items, when you urgently need them the most you just can’t find any! It’s like a universal law. It is especially true to those crafters who are tend to work on multiple projects at the same time. When a couple of unfinished creations are running simultaneously pins could be pinned up all over the places and not been recycled back into their “parking lot” for maybe weeks or months, so just make sure you have a bunch of pins with cushions. Yes, tidy is big here, too. I reckon many DIY-er familiar with the frustrating feeling when seeing a pin in one second then loosing it due to a patterned background and looking for 15 mins then give up, hoping we won’t end up having it in our bed or on the couch later on.
I especially adore heart pins, leaf pins, flower pins just to spice things up a little.
3. Needle Threaders
This tiny thing is one of the most invaluable tool in sewing. When you need to rethread multiple times during a big project, your eyes get tired and the needle hole gets tinier and tinier when you try to locate it with a fine thread.
4. Seam Rippers
Seam rippers are used for opening seams, removing stitches and cutting buttonholes. No other tools could really replace a seam ripper, if you are planning to work without damaging the fabric.
5. Pressing tool / iron
Applying heat and pressing garments along the seam is a step where an item is moulded into shape. Of course as you go along you can invest into curved ones, however a plain household iron will just do the job perfectly.
6. Mix of colourful of threads
It’s a good idea to have as many colours of threads as much it is possible, even if you need to fix a zip or a button the closer the thread matches to the colour of the clothes, the nicer the result is.
7. Marker
Marking just makes life hell of a lot easier.
8. Measure tape
Having a marker of some kind and a measure tape comes hand in hand. Without constantly measuring and keeping the pieces in check would lead you to use the tool a lot I listed under number 4, the seam ripper :)
9. Thimble
Saves blood and tears, literally. Sounds dramatic but it is literally like that, stocking up one or two thimbles will be found incredibly useful when sewing. There are many crafting materials comes into our DIY way that are quite challenging to work with, if sewing with our hands needs to be applied.
Can’t wait to hear how are you getting along with your crafting journey!
Also if you think there should be any other special little gadgets you think of should be added to the listing.
