How About 7 Killer Sewing Hacks & Tips That Will ACTUALLY Make Your Sewing Life Better

I have previously written about how to get into a a creative flow and how to set up the environment to find your creative habit and about how picking up DIY fashion and home made accessories making and sewing hobby how truly enriched my life being as a creativity lover, but I also wanted to add despite all the greatness comes out of home made clothes and home decor making there may be some moments when you just want to throw away the needles and not coming back to it for weeks.

We all love smart tricks, don’t we? And just to know you are not on your own in this.

So for those frustrating moments bank these easy tips to help to ease off those thoughts when you need your strength the most. These can bring the art of doing and making sewing closer and setting you up in a more successful path, filled with less annoying moments.

Use binder clips to hold fabric together

You may be into DIY accessory making, purses, hair clips and unusual handbags can be created from thicker fabrics like denim or faux leather. They can be can be difficult enough to sew, without worrying how to hold them together.

It can not only break your needles if you try to pin them but can cause a slight pain if you don’t have a thimble at hand.

Instead of pins small binder clips can amazingly hold together the fabric and whats the best? They don’t even leave needle marks and holes in fabrics like faux leather after removed.

Starch and sewing

Starch is a very old fashioned way to harden a fabric, this trick was used to be one of the most used item to make costumes and wedding dresses with multiple layered skirts standing firm and with posture.

In today’s fashion we don’t really have those century old dresses but we do have jersey and stretchy material, these fabrics tend to curve on the ends. They can get annoying as we just can not keep them in place even after pinning. This trick is also widely used for shiny slippery materials. The solution is Starch Ironing Aid Spray, or you can just make your own at home.

You can use it bravely, it only stays in the fabric till your next wash, however it gives a firmness and body to the textile once applied and ironed flat.

This simple sewing trick makes sewing with these types of fabric hell of a lot easier!

You may just found the reason to get a tattoo ?

Although I don’t think it’d be wise to make permanent measuring tape tattoo on your skin no matter how much you are into the craft of sewing. And I wouldn’t suggest to get your coolest dress sewing pattern on your body either haha however this trick can help you magically.

Do you do a lot of hand stitching ? If you are into that this one can help especially if you are not practised this type of sewing for long enough.

Grab a pen and make marks on your thumb to create even stitches when hand-stitching. Sew amazing!

It is such a difficult skill to create evenly placed and equally long stitches and make a hem finished pretty. I use a lot of these when I make felt play food and had trouble keeping the stitches in line and making them equally nice.

Bees wax

Bees wax for hand sewn projects will put an end to knots and tangling. Get a piece and pull through your thread a few times like you were dipping them. A little was will magically help getting through the thread without any knots.

White background

If you are having trouble seeing the eye of your needle, place something white behind it. The needle will show up much better and you can focus on the point easier.

Keep those scissors sharp

Keeping scissors sharp isn’t difficult and it doesn’t take much time. Luckily there is an amazing tip! A way to take care of your special sewing scissors from dulling is to ensure that you only cut fabric with them, but in case of them loosing their sharpness cut a big sheet of aluminium foil, fold it several times to create multiple layers and start cutting strips and then watch what is happening with your scissors!

Hair Spray

Those needle holes are just getting smaller and smaller I swear, but luckily there’s a trick for times when you are lack of all the essential and useful basic sewing tools at hand.

Whether you’re threading your machine or hand sewing and occasionally you are having difficulties all you need to do is spray the tip of your thread with hairspray and it will stiffen the thread so you can push the thread just right through, it is like a magic wand slips right into the needle eye without any fraying problem.

Happy making and sewing!
