Fashion Clothing DIY For a Creative Ecosystem

Reconstructing, Refashioning, Updating Old Clothing Hacks DIY

Changes in fashion industry was well on the horizon for the past decade but what last year brought was undoubtedly unexpected and a sudden change in many areas of our life. It opened up plenty of innovative possibilities in the makers movement. Time we spent inside allowed many to discover new hobbies and finish off passion projects. Many young people were lacking the personal and professional growth and felt in limbo. Comparing to other generation Gen Z took on 30% more hobbies during lockdown than any other age groups.

Looking at it as a bigger picture this time unintentionally accelerated a conscious movement as for some cutting back spending was a necessity, which induced a practical approach to everyday living and perhaps potentially initiated a slow down buying things we don’t necessary need.

DIY fashion projects picked up during lockdown as a speed of light

Since I love tricks and tips on fashion hacks for customisation and searching for clothes DIY ideas to update my old or even new clothes I was thrilled seeing all the do it yourself projects came into life. Quarantine brought along a rising in sewing, DIY clothes fashion, handmade accessories DIY within many age groups. Home made projects never been unpopular with a continuous rise, however it really got so much publicity recently.

The interest is huge within young people to be creative in finding ways of updating old clothes, making something entirely new by reconstructing what they already own whilst sparing money with the process.

Gen Z were born into a world full of environmental crisis they are opened to buy eco - friendly products from sustainably sourced places. They worry about climate change, it is important for them to find a solution where sustainability meets fashion.

Their needs aren’t necessarily met by traditional fashion patterns they would like a revolution, they don’t like waste culture.

By this positive approach I think we can all be inspired. In today’s post I would like to share a few mindset that we should all adopt for making our fashion habits more eco friendly.

5 Mindset about fashion recycling from younger generation’s everybody should adopt

Mindset 1: “access, over possession”

Luckily people in a growing number worldwide, but especially younger generation wants to be part of a creative ecosystem of DIY fashion, where individuality, ethical concerns are kept in the forefront, therefore the resale of fashion items labelled more as “access, over possession”. They don’t like the financial burden and the waste it brings along, they would like to access goods and experience it without owning it.

Mindset 2: Guilt Free Freshness

They accustomed to customise. There are already so much in circulation so why not work with what’s already there ? Shop items on sale, thrift, learn how to sew to reconstruct, customise fashion clothes that already produced, own and resell it. They can use that money to buy something new. That way our hunger for trying out new styles and newness of our wardrobe can be kept fresh hand in hand with a conscious low - impact approach to a eco fashion culture.

Mindset 3: Background Check

They don’t like the impact on the environment in a way of how fast fashion promotes throwing it away unwanted clothes. Since sustainable people are taking up a massive online shopper and digital platform users their ethical unique clothing put brands under scrutiny, their conscious mindset will make companies change their game plan if they want to win people’s heart.

Mindset 4: Budget friendly and personal

They are looking to craft out a lifestyle which is based on personal relevance.

Looking for an opportunity to create unique pieces, upcycle from their own wardrobes, customise, experiment new whilst being guilt free and being budget-friendly.

Mindset 5: DIY Makers Culture and Social Media

TikTok and Youtube was flooded with DIY tutorials, step-by-step guides made by younger generations whilst they were locked up in their room during quarantine.

They earned popularity through awareness about the environment, dealing with questions of sustainability expressing their worry about clean air and clean water and eager to take pride in finding ways to the solutions. Brands recognise their impact and eager to work with them on their new product launches, or allowing them to start working with their unused inventory. What can you do ?

Search eco fashion brands, research small green businesses. They usually has small budget for marketing and they have to be discovered. Any social platform is a perfect place to start.

Follow conscious influencers, share your thoughts about alternatives and most importantly don’t be hesitant sharing your own clothes hacks, tips and ideas on how to keep your wardrobe in circulation.
