Turning Fast Fashion Into Slow Fashion

BUY LESS CHOOSE WELL MAKE IT LAST

It is undeniable that fast fashion is problematic. The mass production of generally low-quality garments, especially those created from unsustainable materials and manufactured with poor standards of employment, has led to an all-too-excessive abundance of clothing and, as a result, significant amounts of waste. It is an international issue that needs to be resolved, one that remains personally very important to me.

A SLOWER ALTERNATIVE

I have always been fond of repurposing clothing. There are simply so many reasons to get excited about finding materials and giving them a new life with a brilliant DIY clothing design. It can turn a piece of clothing that you were not previously fond of into something that you adore, giving it just the right colour boost or design tweak it needs. Upcycling clothing and materials also gives you a blank canvas for creativity, allowing your imagination to run wild as your pull together textures and colours into a unique design to perfectly suit your expression!

Perhaps most importantly, however, it is a sustainable method of creation. It is a form of slow fashion and its potential benefits are two-fold. Firstly, it creates new items of clothing without the need for harmful production practices, meaning that the environmental cost of each item is minuscule in comparison to factory-manufactured alternatives. Then, secondly, by using fabric recycling and upcycling old clothes, you are actually preventing further contributions to landfills and refuse. It’s a win-win!

AN EXPRESSIVE OPTION

Another issue with fast fashion and the resulting consumerism it creates is that our high street offerings begin to look monotonous, with window displays each looking similar and, ultimately, boring. How can you truly express yourself if thousands of other people in your area have the same clothing, choosing only from what is available at their nearby stores? Our clothing should reflect the individuality of our own personalities!

Materials are amazingly versatile and potential designs are limited only to your own creative imagination. Each Spice It Up With Dori project begins with this idea and I remind myself that unique and exciting expressions are sometimes only a few stitches or patterns away!

With that being sad go by the motto:

You can browse by categories and find you will find bright, fun and colourful DIYs unlike anything you see in shops. Hopefully, they will inspire you to roll up your sleeves to make and create <3. Or to cheer you up and put a smile on your face.
