Sewing Trend Is On The Rise
Sewing had a new beginning since an incredible numbers of millennials are proudly wearing their handmade items, additionally quarantine time has inspired even more people which led to a massive rising in sewing machines being sold.
So keep up the good work & fire up your machines!
There was a pre-mass fast fashion time when nearly every household had a sewing machine, women had more time on their hands and garments were treated more like a long term investment, clothes were less but looked after. Then economy changed and mass produced items flooded us, ever since the time spent with tailoring and sewing became less valuable in most people’s eyes. But then as part of a broader cultural trend sewing garments and domestic sewing had its debut about 10 years ago it started to become more popular, awareness rose to the backstage of fast fashion production. Younger generation especially Gen Z are more expressive and want to be themselves instead of following a trend, they are more than happy to create their own. They are a huge fan of recycling old clothes, choose from their closet to reconstruct them or buy clothing from second hand stores whilst keeping a positive approach to their image and cheering for body positivity movements.
THINKING OF GETTING A SEWING MACHINE ?
So whatever you have in your “sewing-projects-compartment” mind why you will pick up a sewing machine I can reassure you this one of the best, but at least an amazing pass-time activity. Of course not everyone is into dress making, nevertheless it is such an invaluable tool to equip our home in case a curtain needs to be fixed, cushion needs a hem, a shirt needs a buttonhole..
It has an endless lists with a limitless possibility what you can use it for.
STYLISH BARBIES AND DOGS IN TRENDY FASHION
For me it started very young when I was appointed to a sole provider, stylist, customer maker and brand manager for an entire community, my Barbie dolls their friends and family members. I was so keen to dress up my Barbies in the latest runway couture fashion, not to mention their the doll house which needed to have exciting upcoming home decor trend straight off the cover. I wanted to keep them in the loop never allow them to fell behind the new cycles of fashion from dictators which then resulted in a tons of never ending craft projects and hand sewing cycles..I kept hand stitching trendy fashion clothes one after another. They were always so stylish and fashionable, learning how to come up with ways I saw in Fashion TV and be able to transform into outfits that would fit on my dolls as a kid with not many dress making pattern available was a challenging DIY itself and served a good base I think!
UNUSUAL CLOTHING & HAPPY FUN FASHION
Later when dolls were out of the way I started feeling a pull towards unusual fashion, bright creative fun outfits elevated from constraints of everyday rules and express more about the person, bring light hearted energy and giggle in the room. This and my long lasting loving relationship with colors lead me and motivated me personally learning clothing diy hacks, the basics of tailoring and dress making and picking up ways how to tweak, change, reconstruct, add, cut.
Stores always had a lack when I needed them the most. Never paid too much attention to trends instead wanted to create my own likes for colour not caring too much about seasonal preferences and learning tailoring and DIY sewing fashion tackled the problem. So I could wear a bright coral top in January instead of waiting for this to come along with the other warm breezy vacation summer tones. Atelier designers and custom made fashion houses always had the most beautiful vivid tones and most beautiful shades - however due to their high quality craftsmanship and the time they invest in preparing each masterpiece never made them necessarily affordable to a wider audience. Another reason why pick up sewing, even learning how to assemble sewing patterns as a hobby. There are many magazines that include sewing patterns which can be copied and practised.
So here are the main reason why Sewing is ever so popular and something you should consider, start with the the biggest FUN factor:
Because it is FUN
Creativity is beneficial to your health and it is an amazing way to express your creativity from the comfort of your home. Sewing is a perfect outlet to make something creative with your hands.
A nostalgic element also associated to it, sewing, quilting, fabric patching and hand stitching automatically bring us back to old even ancient times, it symbolises a fond connection to our roots and to women from older times prior fast spaced digitally over polluted life, times when pieces of fabrics and material became bed throws, tailored dresses, toys for house pets, precious monogrammed gifts or body wrappers for new born babies.
All you need is perseverance and keep practising to create your own Project Runway. Set a goal. You decided you would have the best looking dog in the park and perhaps you got inspired by making a matching neck collar to your dog where you can walk elegantly like in the Jo Malone advert?
Or you want to wear the funnest outfit so all the kids want to play with you instead of all the other parents ? Do you plan to transform your lounge corner and spice it up with cushions and patchwork style throws ?
Eco-Friendly Options
Sewing your own clothes is a way to be more eco-friendly for a lot of people. Many simples ways you can take advantage of your sewing knowledge, for example search DIY ideas for textile recycling, learn tips for DIY old clothes ideas
DIY fashion and home made clothes means you are a fan of hand made, customised, high quality garments and put less focus on supporting mass-production clothing brands and uniformity. Have the option to seek fair trade, organic fabrics, textile with high quality, which is the one of the pillar of sustainable fashion as it means we are investing into long term items instead of things we are planning to throw away. Big fashion houses changed their strategy due to scrutiny from customers by reusing their unsold items or give away their dead stock to young artist so they can create new items by upcycling them.
Financially Friendly
If you’ve ever sewn your own dress, then you know that by the time you invest in quality materials and spend a ton of time making that garment, you surely could have gotten a cheaper dress in a big-box store. But that doesn’t mean that sewing is always the more expensive option; in fact, the ability to sew can save you money in a variety of ways. Hem your own pants for a few cents’ worth of thread rather than taking them to a tailor and paying $30. Turn a 99-cent T-shirt from a thrift store into a pair of yoga pants for your baby instead of buying a $20 pair at a boutique. Replace that missing button on your husband’s $25 dress shirt rather than tossing it in the trash. Even just basic sewing skills can add up to big savings for a lot of people, and in a shaky economy that can be reassuring news to say the least!
Internet is your treasure box
Truly forgotten art, sewing is back on and it is considered nearly mainstream nowadays, Etsy has long been the number one source for handmade products and unique gifts and although a few years ago less people preferred items for sale labelled with “handmade” now it became very popular, a new culture. During Covid thousands of handmade, home sewn creations exchanged owners on Depop for example, young people utilised their creativity, love for sustainability and way of supporting eco fashion and their lack of earning power, people used many tools and shared diy clothes ideas, upcycling old clothes and coming up with hacks they can have the experience owning something new for much cheaper than they would have had to pay in stores. Repurpose clothing, buying second hand is more popular than ever and there is never a rest, so if you feel stuck at inspiration ideas just scroll through Pinterest or any other media platform for clothes making ideas & hacks.
