Four Ways Tailoring Can Improve Your Life

Getting creative with needles and sewing machines to create Spice It Up With Dori, has enriched my life in a number of ways. However, even outside of starting this project, I feel that life has become more inspired overall due to the new approach I’ve taken with clothing, resourcefulness, sustainability, and creativity. It is just coco - nuts what kind of things you can make once you let your creativity and personal preference flow.

So, today, I want to share with you four ways that I believe learning to tailor, or begin a DIY clothing hobby, is an amazing way to improve your life!

Save Money

Once you begin learning how to fix small holes or upcycle old clothes, you will start to see your clothing budget get smaller and smaller. No longer will you need to replace clothing as quickly, nor will you find yourself heading straight to the nearest clothing store when you need or want something new. Instead, you’ll begin looking at old clothing items as material, seeing the potential creations that could come from their fabric.

Then, once you gain even more confidence and equip yourself with the basic tailoring tools, you will find yourself buying new clothing altogether less with trips to high street clothing shops being replaced with purchases of fabric or second-hand clothing instead, both of which will definitely save you money. At least this might be a way to justify buying a new sewing machine or roll of new fabric!

Benefit the Environment

I’ve discussed the environmental cost of fast fashion extensively, because it remains very close to my heart as, I believe, it should to us all. By choosing to recycle and repair old clothing, instead of disposing of it and buying new replacements, you are preventing waste and helping to reduce the environmental cost that fast fashion has upon the environment. And, by seeking out or buying secondhand clothing to use for your creative tailoring and DIY clothes projects, you’re further helping to create a greener planet by reducing your carbon footprint.

Recycle your Xmas tinsel

Give a face-lift to your clothes hanging lifeless in your closet. Make metallic foil candies from fabric scraps.

Find a Calling

When you begin sitting down and learning a new skill, numerous things happen. Enjoying a hobby improves wellness by helping us to slow down and focus during the moment, as well as building our confidence with a new craft, one that allows us to better express ourselves and help others.

For some fortunate people, you may even find your creative calling, one that goes beyond the fun of a downtime activity and becomes something special, even a business! Since clothing and fashion have remained throughout history and will certainly continue to do so, it is a skill that will always be useful and be in demand, whether that is helping to design a friend’s shirt or selling your clothing internationally.

Wear What You Want

Perhaps it is solely my own experience (I don’t really think it is!) but when I see clothing across the high street, I rarely come across an outfit that I get very excited to wear. There are many fantastic designs, of course, but often I want to tweak them in some way and make them even more… me! This is where tailoring and DIY clothing, really shines because it enables you to always wear something that makes you happy, describes your personal taste, and expresses your true personality.

When following all the above naturally comes the rest, once you have a needle and a thread and you have the kick you won’t just stop creating accessories or clothes, there are more you can make to spice up! You can create a whole bunch of home decor and indulge yourself into, from curtains to interesting wall art and cushions. Or just simply create, because that’s a good feeling!

If you are into colours and would like to know more about them, their affect on our mood and how we can benefit out of them, or searching for ideas how each and one of them could be incorporated into your every day life, then check out a really colour - fully section on my website dedicated for the Love of Colours
