DIY 3 Easy Ways How To Make Beautiful Fabric Roses
IS EVERYTHING ROSY ?
As it appears rose is the richest in symbolically and the most controversial flower out of many. It makes its appearance not only in fashion but in mythology and literature to religion and politics. Although, women in ancient Egypt decorated their hair and dress with real roses, rose motif found its way to be created in silk, chiffon and in other fabrics when it became the part of fashion in the 18th century.
“One of the things that makes the rose such an exceptional motif in fashion is its ability to be rendered in myriad ways. The rose can be ‘sculpted’ from fabric, printed, woven, or painted. It can be abstracted and still recognised as a rose.” - as the curator of the MFIT exhibition says.
As you may already figured out, I have a massive crush on colours so as attracted to flowers and blooming designs cheering for spring meadows, lush tropical gardens.
It was only a matter of time before I found my craft way to learn and pick up a few hacks how to create and DIY fabric roses. There are many ways you can make roses from fabric, some are easier, some are not.
Since I have tried many different method, I wanted to write about and share with you the 3 most beautiful and easy way how you can make your own roses from fabric, including step by step fabric rose making tutorials below.
WHY ROSE INSPIRED FASHION IS GREAT
First and foremost because it is a happy, cheerful, cool and colourful fashion that displays springtime energy. Floral prints are a go-to fashion trend. And not only in clothing, but also in home decor, upholstery, wall papers as flowers do make anyones positive.
In tailoring and textile art any hand made, hand - stitched floral art could elevate the look, it will always carry a higher value in the eyes of anyone who appreciates creative fashion.
It does make clothing special, unique and has the potential to turn it into a little art wear.
Roses considered to have the purest vibration amongst all other flowers, therefore it is advisable to place them in our surroundings, if we don’t have a garden then make them wearable. Coming from this fact alone no wonder why there is a saying Stop and smell the roses! Probably we should all adopt this mindset, stop and stay in the moment for a little while and appreciate what we have, instead of rushing through life.
Bring a splash of reinvention, optimism and spring with you wherever you go.
Spice up your outfit with roses.
AMAZING UPCYCLE CLOTHING IDEA
Along with all the amazing fun facts there is one practical element which ties into the topic of sustainability. I often experienced that fabric floral roses can be made in an eco way. Since the they don’t require long stretches of material you can utilise little pieces of fabric scraps, or perhaps we can opt for any recycling alternatives as they can be crafted from any left over material as well. It can also be wrapped around in an upcycling fashion project, reuse your old clothing or make roses out of any unwanted skirts, blouses, t-shirts from your closet.
HOW TO MAKE AND DIY FABRIC ROSES ?
You can make fabric roses with all kinds of fabrics but the best ones are made with sheer fabrics, satin, silk, organza, chiffon. If you opt for thicker fabrics it would give you a bulkier end result, like for example a rose made from felt fabric.
It does look like you need a tons of time for making fabric roses, and I must say sewing, hand crafting flower roses from any material isn’t a fast process, but it is worth it!
You will just love them! You can customise it and make it as large or small as you want them to be.
Are you ready to make fabric roses ? I am going to show you three easy DIY technique to make your own fabric rose flower.
ROSE TUTORIAL
THE INDIVIDUAL PETAL METHOD
Cut 4-6 petals of each of the four different sizes of rose petals using the pattern.
Now the longest part :) Carefully curl the edges of each petal by holding them over a lit candle and rotating them one at a time. Don't hold the petals too close at first. Each fabric reacts a bit different, so try and test them very carefully when you hold it closer to the flame. Move slowly and find the right closeness to the heat of the candle fabric per fabric.
As it’s going to take some time, don’t do it all at once. It’s great time for meditation and to be in the state of Flow and think of the Flow-ers.
Thread your needle and then start with a smaller petals. With a few stitches secure it at the bottom. Add another petal, curl it a little bit, also make sure it’s a bit overlapping the previous ones and secure it with a couple of further stitches. Keep adding larger petals so it will increase, and the side will raise gradually.
Keep adding and going till you have a whole flower head. It’s totally customisable, can make small or large. You can adjust the petals as you go, make a bit closed up like cabbage roses or a bit opened like peonies.

MULTANGULAR, SWIRL KIND OF WAY
Fendi and D&G designer coats were scattered lift and right of these roses. They look stunning and ravishing so sourcing from them as an inspiration you can make your own designer inspired rose apliques and jump right straight into the embellishing process!
You can choose many kinds of material for this, cutting a wider strip of fabric can make it bigger and wider than the one I pictured below. The variations are countless and is the fastest and easiest way to have your own three dimension rose print on.
Get a long strip of fabric, can be lines cut from your unwanted t-shirt, or a thrift store organza scarf, anything you fancy. It is actually keeping the fabric edges raw and that look gives a trendy fashion vibe to the roses.
Fold the fabric and start sewing, then twist the fabric piece and turning a bit whilst sewing it and fix the material with your sewing machine, then twist the fabric and turn it, then stitch it down, and again..
…keep sewing in a multangular, swirl kind of way as you are gradually coming out of the centre towards the edge of the flower rounds after rounds.
You can not mess this up, it doesn’t need to perfect. Imperfection makes look even more raw and trendy.

FUNFETTI ROSE RIBBON DIY METHOD FROM FAUX SATIN
I say ribbon but it is actually a long strip of fabric you actually cut into a shape like a large ribbon. For a 10-12 cm finished silk rose head you need to around a 1 m long long strip and 16-18 cm wide fabric.
Once you have your strip, fold it into two in a way how the upper layer creates a triangle shape (as first pic shows) fix it with a needle so it will not slip away then cut another smaller bit off in a triangle shape the side along.
This sloped line would give the rose petal realistic features to the flower as you are stitching the upper fold to the bottom half.
Carry on stitching with your threaded needle and hand sew your ribbon along the way, making sure you keep it a bit ruffled for a more realistic approach.
Once you have your strip, secure it at the end and curl it up into a Danish cinnamon swirl, that will give you a rose shape. I have included a photo how the bottom of the rose looks like at this point.
Seal the layers by cross-stitching at the bottom a few times to secure your creation into a stable art and ready to be used.
I do love enjoying making my roses. It is such a fun sewing project and wouldn’t disappoint anyone.
